Google Earth Your Way to Mount Hitler

Remember how excited we were that the newest version of Google Earth had been released (complete with more Maldives detail)? It turns out that not everyone was so excited, and particularly not the people who live near a small hill near Munich that usually goes by the name of Heigelkopf.

Now while we might think that Heigelkopf is getting close to a hilarious name, its neighbors are quite upset that Google still hasn't fixed a problem with it on Google Earth: it is shown along with an old name, Mount Hitler. Apparently it was only named Mount Hitler for a handful of years during the Third Reich, and the local people have been campaigning for it to be removed from Google Earth for years. Google's response? It's a "technical accident," they'll investigate, and remove it if "there's no historical reason for its inclusion." So check out Mount Hitler while you still can.

Related Stories:
· Google Earth Urged To Remove Mount Hitler Name [Reuters]
· Mount Hitler on Google Maps [Google Blogoscoped]
· New Google Earth Officially Released [Jaunted]
