Heart-Stopping Philadelphia Cheesesteaks

Unfortunately, when we're referring to the oily meat-mountains known as cheesesteaks, we mean heart-stopping literally. People are always yapping about cheesesteaks and Philadelphia: the two things are practically synonymous, like Lindsay Lohan and rehab. We think the steaks are worth mentioning now though, because they're about to change: starting September 1st, Philadelphia is enacting a trans-fat ban. What does that mean for you? The time in which you can most effectively clog your arteries is running out. Rather than give you the tourist run-down, though, here are the steaks that are atypical, authentic, and award-winning:

The Cheesesteak Eggroll at The Continental (138 Market Street). You want Chinese. You want a cheesesteak. How do you ever decide? You don't: you get the cheesesteak eggroll.

The Veggie Cheesesteak at Gourmet to Go (1505 South Street). Purists will kill us for even giving a nod to fake meat, but do you really think that the City of Brotherly Love would leave the vegetarians and vegans out of the cheesesteak joy? Comes in both peppersteak and chicken steak versions.

The Cheesesteak "Hot Pouch" at Grilladelphia (2330 Aramingo Ave). Don't let the gas station location fool you — these pocket steaks have won serious awards.

Okay, okay. You just want a plain old, totally traditional cheesesteak? In an interview with allhiphop.com, Will Smith's old partner, the "Philadelphia born and raised" DJ Jazzy Jeff, lays out what to do:

I'll tell people — go on 57th and Spruce. Go to the neighborhood joint where the guy's got the grill behind there and they sell potato chips and penny candy and all the rest of that. You can't go to Jim's, you can't go to Pat's; you gotta go to where they give it to you, and the bottom of the bag is greasy.

MMM. Heart-stopping indeed.
