A town of 250 people that doesn't even have its own zip code is easy to miss. But Shelburne, a tiny town founded by people who thought that the already rural surrounding towns in the late 1700s were "too crowded," gives visitors one thing that isn't easy to find at popular vacation spots -- solitude. Think it sounds boring? It can be. Here's how to enjoy it:

Where to Stay
When you're in a rural area, you don't stay in a hotel -- you stay in a bed and breakfast. You're an idiot if you pass up a home cooked breakfast and country charm for nubby carpet and a bible in the drawer. Get the relaxation you deserve at the Wildberry Inn (592 State Route 2). Just make sure you reserve the barn, you'll wake up overlooking a gorgeous pond.

Where to Eat
We're not going to tell you to eat in Shelburne because, well, the town doesn't have any restaurants. But in the next town over, Gorham, Libby's Bistro (111 Main Street) is absolutely divine. As the only gourmet restaurant in town, Libby's makes delicious dishes that highlight local ingredients.

What to Do
Hike or ski. Or you could also canoe or fish or hunt. But really, in Shelburne, the outdoors is king (since there are so few buildings, after all). Experience a piece of the illustrious Appalachian Trail, or, if it's winter, go skiing at Sunday River (just over the border in Bethel, Maine). It's one of the best places to ski in the Northeast.
