Summer Vacation with an Edge: Storm Chasing

July 8, 2008 at 10:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

If you've been paying attention to the news you may have noticed that there's been a sharp increase in the amount of tornadoes in the US this year. Just yesterday, another storm pounded a town near the Canadian border in North Dakota, damaging about 15 homes. Blame it on global climate change, chalk it up to coincidence or do something about it--and go check it out yourself!

Movies like "Twister" glamorized storm chasing, but now many tours have been created to get you right in the middle of these deadly tornadoes. Groups like Cloud 9 Tours, Tempest Tours and Storm Chasing Adventure Tours offer the opportunity to chase the weather over a week or two and witness intense lightning, strong winds and large hail.

Typical days on most of the tours start with a big breakfast, because after that anything is possible. Storms can strike at anytime, but things get intense during the late afternoon into the evening. Expect to spend your day in an SUV or van traveling up to 500 miles each day in search of the big one.

Some tours have already been filled for this summer, but 2009 is just around the corner. You can lock in prices on some of the tours now, and with gas prices rising and the tours already starting at just under $3,000, you'll probably end up ahead.
