Canceled 'Mars' Still Filming in NYC

March 9, 2009 at 3:56 PM | by cmb | 0 Comments

Even though Life on Mars, the ABC series about a detective who is hit by a car and wakes up in 1973, was recently canceled, they are still filming the series’ final episodes in and around NYC. Today, they are at City Island Yacht Club in City Island.

City Island, located just off of the Bronx, is one of New York’s best-kept secrets, a real taste of New England in the middle of the Big Apple. The island has one main street, the aptly named City Island Ave, which stretches its entire length, a whopping 1.5 miles, and is lined with seafood restaurants, antique shops, and corner stores. The primarily residential side streets that jut off of City Island Ave terminate at beaches, most of which are locked and gated.

The numerous yacht clubs and marinas surrounding the island are reminders of its nautical past but its darker side is way more interesting although rather morbid. Looming off the eastern shore of City Island is Hart Island, a potter’s field for New York City since the American Civil War. Nearly 2000 unidentified dead are buried there each year, including body parts and still-born babies. If that doesn’t spook you, you can hear a constant popping noise from any point on the island. What sounds like fireworks, is actually from a large firing range not far away.

If you’re looking for some good seafood and a night away from NYC, City Island fits the bill but don’t go expecting the Hamptons. CI is way more modest and, refreshingly, less pretentious. If you’re not into seafood, or the sound of gunshots, there’s something for you too, check out Artie’s for a delish Italian meal at a reasonable price.
