Cupid's Loving Brooklyn

January 5, 2009 at 9:45 AM | 0 Comments

A new year brings with it new TV shows and one of them is filming in Brooklyn today. We've gotten word that the news series "Cupid" is filming outside of Earwax Records. The show, which stars Sarah Paulson, debuts on ABC this spring.

Earwax is an old-school store specializing in an eclectic mix of upcoming bands, classic rock, techno, jazz, funk, soul and world music. Some people think Earwax is pretentious and overpriced, but it is on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg. We can tell you this much: If you're looking for the new Britney Spears CD this is not the place for you. But Earwax does have a huge selection that caters to local hipsters looking for something eccentric to add to their music collection, maybe even something on vinyl.

Natalie Goes To Film School

December 23, 2008 at 10:00 AM | 0 Comments

Today, "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," starring Natalie Portman, is filming at the Dalton School in New York City. Dalton, an elite private school, is located a block away from the Guggenheim Museum, no stranger to filming itself. Just this year two big-budget flicks, "The International" and "When in Rome," were shot there.

On January 6, the Gugg will present a 24-hour program on the concept of time, "theanyspacewhatever." The show, the museum says, will:

Concentrate on the concept of time in its myriad philosophical, psychological, biological, sociological, poetic, aesthetic and economic manifestations. Constituting a multi-disciplinary approach to the subject, the program will bring together artists, architects, scientists, philosophers, historians, engineers, filmmakers, musicians and other cultural producers.

Sounds a little too deep for us, so we might just stick with having drinks up the street.

Some "Unusual" Filming In Tompkins Square Park

December 22, 2008 at 10:30 AM | 0 Comments

A new ABC pilot called “The Unusuals” is filming just outside of Tompkins Square Park in New York City today. The “comedic procedural” starring Amber Tamblyn and Harold Perrineau ("Lost") will premiere in April.

If dogs in costume, men in wigs or wannabe beatniks are your thing, this park's for you. Tompkins Square is known for its eccentric events and festivals held throughout the year, and the biggest is the Howl! Festival, a celebration of art, poetry and music named in honor Allen Ginsberg’s famous Beat poem. The highlight of Howl! is Wigstock, a day-long drag show, created nearly 25 years ago, and the inspiration for the documentary of the same name. Each October, the park also hosts the largest Halloween costume party for dogs in the country.

Besides quirky fests, the Alphabet City institution offers chess tables, a basketball court and playgrounds that are open year-round.

A Mob Scene In Los Angeles

December 19, 2008 at 10:31 AM | 0 Comments

"Watchmen," one of the most anticipated movies of 2009 based on a graphic novel of the same name, is filming at the intersection of Broadway and West 8th Street in Los Angeles today. The scene is elaborate: More than 250 angry extras are going to rush out of a building and into the street before someone will be chased by police dogs and arrested.

Sounds like a lot of drama, especially considering it's all happening just two blocks from Grand Hope Park, known as the most tranquil spot in downtown LA. More than just a park, Grand Hope is also an outdoor art space with a modern clock tower, fountains and even coyote sculptures marking the paths that meander through its 2.5 acres. The park is cherished by locals as an oasis of green grass in an otherwise dismal sea of parking lots.

In NYC, "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits," starring Natalie Portman, is filming near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. When most people think of The Met, they think of fine art, but when we hear it mentioned, we get into happy hour mood. The Balcony Bar on the museum's second floor serves drinks and appetizers accompanied by live classical music until 8:30 on Friday and Saturday nights. They aren't the cheapest drinks in town, but the view is totally worth it.

Adam Sandler Telling Bedtime Stories In LA

December 18, 2008 at 10:00 AM | 0 Comments

Tonight, "Bedtime Stories" with Adam Sandler premieres at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood. The theater opened in 1926 as LA’s "first home of spoken word" and was the hot spot of its day. In 1989, The Walt Disney Company led a museum-quality restoration, and El Capitan is now the exclusive first-run theater for Disney movies, including "Bedtime Stories."

Meanwhile in Brooklyn, "Cupid" is filming at the New York Transit Museum. You might remember "Cupid" 1.0 that starred Jeremy Piven in the late ‘90s. (Or not since it only lasted 13 weeks.) ABC decided to give the series another shot with a new cast and a new producer, Rob Thomas.

Today’s location, the New York Transit Museum, is housed in a 1930s subway station containing vintage subway cars, antique turnstiles and a working signal tower. The museum also features specialized exhibits about engineering, the streets of NYC and the birth of auto travel in the US. Their most popular, though, is The Annual Holiday Train Show, now open at the Gallery Annex and Store in Grand Central Terminal, through January 19.

No More Goats

December 17, 2008 at 11:00 AM | 0 Comments

Today, we're so sorry to report, is the last day of principal shooting for “Men Who Stare at Goats.” The movie will be filming at SunCal Dunes in Albuquerque, a 55,000-acre tract of land with spectacular views of the cityscape that may soon become a massive housing development. We don’t which is the bigger shame: Transforming a tranquil landscape into suburbia or watching another George Clooney movie wrap.

In Wisconsin, Eric Roberts, most recently seen on “Heroes,” has started in on the indie flick, “Project Solitude." They'll be filming around Flintville today, a small town located in the metro Green Bay area. This isn’t the first movie to come through these parts this year: Johnny Depp was in Wisconsin for more than two months in the spring filming “Public Enemies.”

Paradise Lost

December 16, 2008 at 10:00 AM | 0 Comments

Helen Mirren is currently filming a new adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" on the big island of Hawaii. For the past week or so they have been shooting at McKenzie State Park, 25 miles southeast of Hilo. The 13-acre park offers picnicking, fishing and beautiful views of the volcanic coastline.

Sounds perfect, right? Not so fast. While the cast and crew were working on Friday, a body with gunshot wounds was found on the shore of the park. The police didn't question anyone involved with the movie since they were working quite far from where the corpse was found, but they do believe the man was shot earlier that day.

Elsewhere, if we've learned anything since our On Location series started, it's that movies and TV shows film around airports way more than we would've imagined. Two weeks ago, Natalie Portman was filming "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits" at JFK; Friday, "Middle Man" starring Luke Wilson was filming near LAX; and today, "Fringe" is filming at LaGuardia. So if you're catching a flight, you may want to be on the look out for any paranormal activity.

30 Rock Goes Home For The Holidays

December 15, 2008 at 9:45 AM | 0 Comments

Is there any better time of year to visit Rock Center than during the holidays? Tina Fey must not think so since "30 Rock," which usually films in a studio in Long Island City, is venturing out to film scenes at the real 30 Rock today. Right now, Rockefeller Center is pimped out in its Christmas best, the tree is up, the skaters are out and the windows are decorated. For a bird's eye view of all the action, head 70 stories up to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck.

If the hustle and bustle of the city isn't for you, maybe you can check out the new TV drama, "Kings," filming at Tallman Mountain State Park in Rockland County, New York. The park is located on the easterly slope of the Palisades uplands and overlooks the Hudson and Piermont Marsh, which lies between the river and the slope. For outdoorsy types, the park offers hiking trails, cross-country skiing, and scenic picnic areas. Tallman Mountain is located about 18 miles north of NYC on Route 9W.

George Gets Heated at White Sands

December 12, 2008 at 11:00 AM | 2 Comments

Today, "Men Who Stare at Goats" is filming around White Sands National Monument, just outside of Alamogordo, New Mexico. White Sands is the largest gypsum sand dune field in the world, though the dunes look more like snow-covered hills than something out of a spaghetti western. You can actually rent a saucer at the visitor's center to try sliding down the dunes ski slope-style.

The park is also surrounded by the White Sands Missile Range--which may be the exact location of today's shoot--an area that's been used in several movies, including "Transformers." It's still active, and occasional road closures around the entire complex can happen when experimental weapons are being tested.

Saturday, "Middle Men," starring Luke Wilson, will be filming on Westchester Parkway in Los Angeles just outside of LAX. If Luke has to film inside the airport, his celebrity status won't get him any special treatment: According to the Daily News, the Los Angeles City Council decided this week against regulations that would control paparazzi at LAX and give priority treatment to celebs.

"Marley and Me" Let Loose In LA

December 11, 2008 at 10:30 AM | 0 Comments

The big premiere of "Marley and Me," starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, is tonight in Los Angeles at Mann's Village Theater. The Spanish Mission style theater, located at 961 Broxton Ave., opened in 1931 and has remained one of the most popular venues in LA for events and premieres.

The release of "Marley and Me", primarily filmed in Miami, has meant a media blitz for Jen, who just can't stop talking about the Jolie-Pitts. In the latest issue of GQ, she claims that they all hang out together in the Hamptons. Of course she must be joking because we all know the Jolie-Pitts wouldn't be caught dead in a pedestrian vacation destination like the Hamptons.

Meanwhile in NYC, "Law and Order" is filming at City Hall in lower Manhattan. The building is the oldest city hall in the country and is renowned for its architecture, including a dramatic rotunda and sweeping formal staircase. If you want to get up close and personal with the building, private tours are available through the city of New York.

CSI: Los Angeles

December 10, 2008 at 1:20 PM | 0 Comments

First up today, "CSI: New York" is, strangely enough, filming at 1360 E 6th St. in downtown Los Angeles, which has seen a resurgence in the last few years. The latest evidence of this is L.A. Live, a new sports and entertainment district featuring a state of the art theater, hotel, residential housing, retail and office space. Just last week Britney Spears helped light the Christmas tree at the new complex and we all know nothing says "resurgence" like an appearance by Britney.

Meanwhile, in Boston, Spike TV's new series, "War of '04", is filming at The Boston Winery. The show is said to be an Irish knock off of "The Sopranos;" the winery on the other hand, is completely unique. Unlike other wineries where you can sit back and taste several varieties, here you have to make your own wine. And don't think you can leave with the fruits of your labor after one visit, it takes at least four visits and nearly a year to produce your first bottle.

Spotted: B & S At The Museum Of NYC

December 9, 2008 at 11:00 AM | 0 Comments

Today, the "Gossip Girl" crew is filming at the Museum of the City of New York which is the real-life location of the kids' prep school. It's often overlooked for more popular stops on Museum Mile but it's worth a visit. This month, they're featuring a special exhibit on Catholics in New York from 1808 until the end of World War Two.

Our second spot today isn't exactly a filming location, though we are sure someone will be there with a camera: Kiefer Sutherland is finally getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His will be located on Hollywood Boulevard, west of Orange. The Walk of Fame is a must for all tourists to Los Angeles--even though everyone knows it's nothing more than a PR thing that the celeb's studio or manager pays for.
