Ice at Santa Monica: Presented by Starbucks coffee as part of the Santa Monica Winterlit festival, a temporary ice rink has been built at 5th Street and Arizona Avenue, near the Third Street Promenade. The rink is open through January 6 from 11 am to 9 pm, and it stays open till 10 on Friday and Saturdays. The rink is open on Christmas day, giving all of us ex-East Coasters a sort of white Christmas to enjoy. Admission is $10 and includes skate rental. 1324 Fifth St., Santa Monica
Culver City Ice Arena: A traditional, year-round ice skating rink that offers private instruction, classes and public sessions. The rink is open to the public from 1:30 to 5 pm Monday-Sunday but is closed from 2 to 2:30 pm on Saturdays. Kids under 12 get in for $7, adults get in for $8. 4545 Sepulveda Blvd., Culver City
Downtown on Ice, Pershing Square: Put on by the NHL's LA Kings, the Downtown on Ice in Pershing Square has entered its 10th year as a seasonal rink. It also lasts the longest with the final day of skating on January 21, 2008. Admission is $6 plus a $2 skate rental. If you take the Metro there [Ed note: Riiight.], you will get $1 off admission price. And since it's part of the LA Kings, free youth hockey clinics are offered on selected dates.
General skating is offered Monday through Friday from noon to 10 pm and on the weekends from 10 am to 10 pm, with extended hours during peak holiday season from Dec. 14 to Jan. 6. 532 South Olive St., Los Angeles
Pasadena Ice Skating Center: Another year-round center to hit up when you need to feel ice under your feet. The rink has several different public sessions from general ($7 admission) to cheapskate ($7 and includes skate rentals) to an adult skate club session which is $7.50 and includes free coffee and donuts. Van Nuys Iceland: Who can resist ice-skating in the San Fernando Valley, where several cheesy 80s movies took place? (For some reason we associate ice-skating with the 80s; that was probably the last time we skated.) Anyways, this Iceland doesn't just offer traditional hockey and figure skating lessons. It also offers Bumper Cars on Ice, available to the public and for birthday parties from 12 to 2 pm on the weekends.
General public skating is offered throughout the week and on weekends, starting at noon Monday-Friday and 2:15 on Saturdays and Sundays. You can also have a date night on Saturday as the place is open until 10pm. Admission starts at $7. 14318 Calvert St., Van Nuys
The Lakes Ice Rink: A little further out in Thousand Oaks, the Lakes Ice Rink is open from now through January 6th. The hours are a little confusing (it's done in sessions) so check the website before you go. Price is $8 admission and $3 for figure skate rentals and $4 for hockey skate rentals.
