'Gossip Girl' Spinoff: We Love The '80s!

February 10, 2009 at 2:21 PM | by egw | 2 Comments

With our favorite Upper East Siders on hiatus until March 9, we are free to engage in wild speculation about the once-denied, now-confirmed "Gossip Girl" throwback spinoff. The leaks turned out to be true: The new series will focus on Lily and Rufus' fine '80s romance in Los Angeles, although how Lily got her staid, establishment parents to let her move to California is anyone's guess.

We've heard the name Kristen Bell (currently the voice of "Gossip Girl") bandied about to play little Lil, but the only announced member of the cast so far is Krysten Ritter (Isla Fisher's best friend in the new movie "Confessions of a Shopaholic") who has been tapped to play the older Bart sister and black sheep.

Of course, the locations for this new show won't be as juicy as the downtown hotspots and private ballrooms of its New York City cousin because they will be vintage. But we know that when "Lily dives into the fast-paced Sunset Strip and the Hollywood lifestyle of the '80s," we'll be watching to see exactly where that lifestyle takes her. Here are a few spots we're hoping the CW can bring back along with their nostalgia kick:

Oki Dog -- Before Rufus found national success with his lame Soul Asylumesque band, maybe he hung out with the punks at Santa Monica and Vista, near this extremely budget stand. That one no longer exists, but producers might consider shooting in the parking lot at 5056 W. Pico or 860 N. Fairfax. Could Lily and Rufus have met over a hot dog? Can you even show that on TV?

The Riot Hyatt -- It just re-opened as the Andaz West Hollywood, but 8401 West Sunset Boulevard will always be known for the antics of British superstars of the '70s like Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones. Its proximity to the Strip mean that young Lily may find herself stumbling there after a wild night and running into longtime resident Little Richard (special guest Jamie Foxx??)

The Anti-Club -- LA Weekly readers named this joint one of the top 20 clubs in Los Angeles for its 20th anniversary in 1998. Now 4658 Melrose Avenue is a dance club called Gabah, but we assume a boatload of costumed extras and a few corrections to the decor could transform it back to the place where a young Perry Farrell used to drink after his waiter gig in Laurel Canyon.

The "Gossip Girl" spinoff will get a backdoor pilot on the May 11 episode of its originating program. Where do you think "Gossip Girl West" should be shooting? And what's your bright idea for a title? We like either "GG Goes To Hollywood" or "How I Met Your Girlfriend's Mother."
