Stalking the Empire Asparagus Festival: Welcome to Piss-Happy Michigan

May 21, 2012 at 4:16 PM | by | Comments (0)

Here at Jaunted, we spend considerable time and (virtual) ink drooling over weird food festivals. So, this summer, we've decided to visit a few. All this week our Michigan embed Lara Zielin will report back from the Empire Asparagus Festival.

Empire, Michigan may host the only food festival where people talk extensively about pee. A necessary conversation cornerstone, perhaps, when you dedicate an entire weekend to asparagus, the vegetable that can transform a “humble chamberpot into a bower of aromatic perfume,” as Marcel Proust once put it.

Embracing funky pee is just part of the whole asparagus experience trumpeted by Empire residents, from root to shoot. Each year, the 400-person village on the white-sand shores of Lake Michigan swells to hold thousands, all coming together for asparagus beer, the asparagus parade, an asparagus cook-off, the “Kick Ass-paragus” 5k, and (of course!) the asparagus poetry contest.

The Skywriting That Took New York City's Beautiful Day by Storm

May 21, 2012 at 10:58 AM | by | Comments (0)

In you case you missed it on our Instagram feed yesterday, a single sentence of skywriting appeared above Manhattan on Sunday afternoon and, in the clear blue sky, spelled out "Christine Hall Will U Marry Me."

Immediately Twitter and Instagram went crazy with news and images of the skywriting, as it could be spotted from as far as Riverside Park on the west side of the Manhattan, to where we stood in Astoria, Queens (cause you know we look up at the sound of any airplane engine). The entire stretch of dot-matrix cloud letters could be best read from the middle of Central Park, where it seems the couple were relaxing on what was, weather-wise, perhaps the nicest New York day yet.

Coming Soon for Your Legs and Butt: Alaska Airlines' New Seats

May 21, 2012 at 9:36 AM | by | Comments (0)

We haven’t heard too much from Alaska Airlines lately. Of course there was that time they ditched the prayer cards and the mysteriously itchy uniforms, but now they’re making news for an actual improvement. The eskimo-faced carrier is looking forward to the arrival of some new seats.

Alaska Airlines fell hard for the presentation from the suits over at Recaro Aircraft Seating, as they’re going all in with one of the manufacturer’s latest designs. The updated features include a six-way adjustable headrest, as well as three inches of recline. The new seats will even feature like an inch more of legroom, so feel free to stretch out once aboard—at least just a little bit.

Alaska Airlines Will Again Reel in the Special 'Salmon-Thirty-Salmon' 737

May 18, 2012 at 10:11 AM | by | Comments (0)

A look at the plan for the new fish...

You know we’re suckers for anything to do with airplane liveries, and we also always get a kick out of travel stuff involving animals. So that’s why we couldn’t resist sharing an update regarding Alaska Airlines and their plans for the next generation of their “Salmon-Thirty-Salmon.”

The original fish-plane initially entered the hangar for the finned paint job back in 2005, but after a couple years of flying to here and there it was in need of an update. Unfortunately, it was repainted into the normal Alaska Airlines colors and the world lost this quirky airplane for the time being.

Atlanta Airport's New $1.4 Billion Dollar International Terminal is Open!

May 16, 2012 at 11:36 AM | by | Comments (0)

Smell that? That's the scent of brand new airport, as Atlanta's Airport opens the doors to their brand new Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal today. The building is 1.2 million square feet with 12 gates, and cost $1.4 billion to complete. Now that is finally completed, however, what can you expect as a traveler winging your way to or from far-away destinations?

Yummy, convenient food options. Pei Wei Asian Diner, The Varsity (classic American burgers and hot dogs), Ecco Kitchen, Jekyll Island Seafood Company, Lorena Garcia Tapas Bar, Maison Mathis, Sweet Auburn Market Café, The Pecan, and The original El Taco will fill out the terminal, and of course there will be a Starbucks. Notice no Sbarro for reheated, overpriced pizza slices! Progress!

(Hopefully) faster, easier security. There'll be two security checkpoints in the new terminal, with a total of 13 lanes. Of course those won't all be in use at the same time, but we have high hopes for an airport that's been designed after 9/11, after the introduction of mobile boarding passes and after years of new security rule after new security rule.

Seattle Cuts the Ribbon on One Slick and Sexy Car Rental Facility

May 15, 2012 at 4:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

Go ahead and call us picky, but one of our travel pet peeves is landing at a beautiful airport and then suffering through a horrible shuttle ride over to an outdated and poorly lit rental car lot. We’re big fans of oversized rental car facilities where we can walk, bus, or train it over to our rental, so that’s why we’re pumped to hear about the plan over at Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle.

Costing around $400 million buckaroos, the new place takes up like 23 acres or so of space, and there’s plenty of room for rental everything, from big SUVs down to Chevy Aveos. It’s even freeing up around 3,000 parking spaces from other spots in and around the airport, so that’s a positive for those who arrive at the airport the old fashioned way—by taking their car. The new rental car palace has room for over 5,000 cars, and the plan is that it can process as many as 14,000 cars during a single day. We just wonder how it’s going to hold up during its first Memorial Day weekend.

Whoa. Coachella 2013 Dates and Ticket Details Just Announced!

May 14, 2012 at 3:39 PM | by | Comments (0)

HOLY SMOKES, you guys. The dates have already been announced for Coachella 2013 and ticket sales begin next week! Didn't everyone just, like, get over their hangovers from the desert orgy music festival this year?

The dates you need to set aside in your iCal are: April 12-14 & April 19-21, 2013.

As with Coachella 2012, 2013's version will be split into two identical weekends of performances from musicians old and new, with a hologram or two thrown in for max viral appeal. The only thing that won't be identical are the attendees, since you have the option of hitting up the first weekend and being surprised, or hitting up the second and being well prepared. Either way, we recommend you start phoning your choice Palm Springs hotel now to inquire about early booking deals.

Lest you forget, Coachella is an event that's ticketed in advance. The first tickets will go up for sale online through the official Coachella website NEXT WEEK. Specifically they state, "Advance passes go on sale beginning this Thursday, May 17th, 2012 10:00 am PDT through the following Thursday, May 24th, 2012 10:00 pm PDT."

Count your pennies, kids, and see you there?

Cast Your Vote for Frontier Airlines' Next In-Flight Brewsky

May 14, 2012 at 10:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

Photo of the current leader...

Fresh off voting for their new animal tail, it looks like Frontier Airlines is looking for your help making a business decision once again. The airline is planning to bring a brand new beer to the in-flight menu, and they want to you pick from a couple different options of ales, lagers, and stouts.

There’s four different options from which to choose, so be sure to do the necessary research before casting your vote for Dale's Pale Ale, Upslope Pale Ale, Colorado Native, or Crabtree Oatmeal Stout. All the different options are brewed right in Colorado, so they’re definitely showing a little bit of hometown—or home state—pride. We’re kind of torn about which to choose, but we know that any of them will be a good fit alongside Fat Tire and Coors Light on the beverage cart.
