Book Your Kryptonite Tour Now

April 25, 2007 at 9:56 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

Serbians must be breathing a sigh of relief at the news there is now a real reason for tourists to visit Serbia. With the scrapping of the Samantha Fox statue and the lack of world acclaim for the decision to build a Rocky Balboa statue in the village of Zitiste, things were looking shaking until the recent discovery of kryptonite on Serbian land.

Yep, that magical mineral previously thought to come from Superman's home planet has now been unearthed by mining giant Rio Tinto in Jadar, Serbia. It's actually a new mineral but coincidentally it matches exactly to the invented formula for Superman's kryptonite. Unfortunately, it's going to get named jadarite after the Serbian town, but we think there's definite potential for a big Superman statue now.

Supercool Suriname

Where: Suriname

Surinam Airways operates the most beautiful airline website we've seen in quite some time. The lead font alone is enough to merit design accolades, and the elongated red bird in flight that serves as the airline's icon matches the retro aesthetic. The result is a lush, funky love letter to 1970s modernism.

The downside is the site's locked booking engine, which only allows the purchase of Amsterdam-Paramaribo flights and which furthermore feels clunky and unreliable. The fact that the site is almost entirely in Dutch also limits its general useability beyond the Taalunie, or the Dutch language community.

Language issues aside, the site is well-designed, full of information about Surinam as a destination, vacation package offers, and short interviews with Surinamese immigrants to the Netherlands. The look is newsy and engaging and the colors of the site, which more or less match the Surinamese flag, are a nice touch.

In addition to Paramaribo and Amsterdam, Surinam Airways flies to Aruba, Barbados, Belem, Curaçao, and Port of Spain.
