Before she left for the achingly glamorous life of a Peace Corps volunteer in Namibia, Jill Nawrocki used to write for us. We miss her volunteer travel ideas and her flight reviews, but we're getting over it by reading about her adventures in Southern Africa.
At least for the time being, things aren't too busy:
I've perfected my raisin bread, white bread and pizza dough over the last two weeks and have an entire cookbook to tackle over the coming two years. It's lonely to cook for one, but my dad always told me in a new place, food helps make friends...
I've already polished off a library's worth of literature and can now safely say there is no such thing as a bad book when it's the only book left to read.
As time goes by, and her two-year gig with the Peace Corps rolls on, we'll be interested to see what adventures she gets up to. The latest is what looks like a great weekend trip to the Waterberg Plateau.

The last time Namibia was in the news, it was because of the invasion of Super World Travelers Brangelina, who chose the country for Angelina Jolie to give birth to daughter Shiloh. Now England's Prince Harry has pulled the spotlight to the African country, although not with such positive results.
Maybe the prince can undo the damage done by the party photos of his friends and himself in Namibia once he's closer to the throne. Like any 23-year-old with no job, HRH spent his holiday drinking, attaching shot glasses to his nipples and getting what looks like a wicked sunburn. In response to his performance, Jenna and Barbara Bush released a statement titled, "See, We Did This In Argentina But At Least We Didn't Make a Video."

When we think sand we usually picture a nice beach, but chatters over at the Lonely Planet's Thorn Tree have got other ideas: dunes. And according to this board of globetrotters, Namibia is the place to see the biggest and the best.
Sossusvlei is a salt pan in the Namibian desert, but it's known for it's incredible red sand dunes that rise more than 3,000 feet in some places. If it's a once in a lifetime trip, chatters say these dunes are not to be missed. And they've got a few tips for making the most out of the adventure, too.
Go to Sossusvlei, make sure you go further than Dune 45 at some time, wear whatever you want on your feet, spend two nights nearby. Stay hydrated, don't walk from the end of the 2wd part in the heat of the day if you can avoid it, take plenty of film and a sun hat and last but not least - don't try and make sand castles, it just doesn't work.
And if you're planning a trip to Namibia, now's the time to go, since December and January tend to see the most rain. Would that make the sand castle construction easier?

There is a new reason to join the merry band of celebs hopping around Africa aside from adopting a child for their collection or just gaining some press coverage--hiding out from the IRS.
Wesley Snipes has supposedly been hanging out in Namibia while shooting a movie. But the actor has also been slapped with tax fraud charges to tune of $12 million so perhaps making a movie is the new "ate nothing all day and had one margarita" before getting pulled over for a DUI.
While Snipes could face up to sixteen years in jail if convicted on all charges, so far there's been no extradition request issued to Namibia. So he's free to explore all the region has to offer.
The African country has already been forever changed by a heavenly visit from Brangelina, and is also the birthplace of the new messiah for celebrity children everywhere, Shiloh Jolie Pitt. Yet if the country could allow Shiloh to spread her wings and fly to her castle in Malibu, there's no reason why they wouldn't send Snipes back . That is, unless he brought copies of "White Men Can't Jump" with him.

First, Brad and Angelina defected to Namibia (in a possible attempt to destroy the country's
fragile infrastructure), and now they've supposedly given rights to their baby's name in exchange for the inconvenience.
It has been reported in a number of pseudo-reputable
British publications that Brangelina have given the right to name their perfect child to Namibian governor Samuel Nuuyoma. While the stars' reps refute the claim, Nuuyoma says, "It's true...This is a great honor for Namibia, and everyone is very excited." We know we certainly are, but could it really be any worse a name than Apple, or Moon Unit?
Who are we to believe? A regional Namibian tribal leader, or Pitt, a soon-to-be father who was caught Thursday pulling a Britney? Yes, sadly, Namibia saw its first case of celebrity
baby neglect when Brad took little Zahara, aged 16 months, out for a bike ride. In a papoose. Without a helmet. No doubt this lapse in judgement will fail to threaten the Namibian government, which presumably has worse child welfare problems to deal with. But the paparazzi's all over it!
And for visitors to Namibia: Look forward to
National Brangelina Junior Day!

Brangelina are not only in love with Namibia, but anxious to spread the country's clever handicrafts worldwide. Those kids need something to play with out in the bone-bare desert, after all.
A British textile and fashion site reports that the couple are "working hard with the Namibian craftsmen to create a range of assortment of rugs, pottery and other household items that are expected to be showcased at the Paris Art Fair in September."Oooh--could we somehow support Brangelina instead of Pottery Barn?
Honestly, handicrafts are even more exciting than the soon-to-arrive Brangelina baby. We would, without question, buy a Brangelina brand papoose, with a newborn or not.

Back in November of 2000, when sitting down with an issue of Wallpaper* felt like a private four-hour aesthetic tutorial, our favorite asterisked magazine published a medium-length feature on Swakopmund, Namibia, a resort town close to Brangelina's current Langstrand redoubt.
Written by Kate Spicer, the article was full of gorgeous, sparse photos of the edges of the desert as well as one photo of the modern, tidy tiled interior of the Swakopmund Court. The feature opened with the observation that Swakopmund is caught between the world's oldest desert and the frigid currents of the south Atlantic.
In her article, Spicer alternated between disdain and fascination for Swakopmund's "inverted population of fourth-generation German Africans and the odd fresh retiree from Cologne." Ethnic Germans are a small but economically powerful minority in the former German colony of Namibia, and Swakopmund is one of the country's main German population centers.
Spicer even commented on Langstrand in her feature:
Halfway to Walvis Bay, a plot of land called Langstrandt [sic], or Long Beach, was meant to be a small cluster of simple bungalows: instead the country's rich have built holiday homes that are pure Miami Vice.
So there you have it: Brangelina are holed up on a flashy, garish stretch of the Namibian coast.

By now we all know Super World Travelers Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt hand picked Namibia as the location for the final act before the birth of Jedi Jolie-Pitt. No word yet on whether or not the Jolie-Pitt clan will stick around Namibia post birth and pursue the quiet life of moisture farming. Nonetheless, the Namibian's are
screaming from the highest sand dunes about the super couples recent habitation of their spotlight deprived nation.
Their presence is a "very good thing" for Namibia, says ambassador Hopelong Ipinge from the Embassy of the Republic of Namibia in Washington, D.C. The attention is as good for tourism as it is for "world cultural understanding," he says, and the couple probably are drawn to the country's history and culture as well as the "peaceful nature" of the people.
Jolie first visited Namibia in 2002 when she was filming "Beyond Borders," which is set during Ethiopia's catastrophic, "We Are the World" famine of 1984. Jolie has called reading the script "a life-changing event that prompted her to become a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations."
Ever since, Namibian towns from Swakopmund to Tsumeb have been experiencing a bit of a renaissance that might just be getting warmed up. It appears to be only a matter of time before the
Times and the
Times annoint Nabibia the new new thing in travel.
Stay tuned.
