Where: Ireland
March 31, 2011 at 2:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

Tax day is coming, and you are excited not because you look forward to sifting through receipts and credit card statements, but because you're getting a fat refund...probably. The economy may be on its way back up, but you should try to stretch that tax refund as far as you can.

You may have had your dose of Ireland from St. Patrick's Day earlier in the month, but if you are looking to make the most of your tax refund, you should consider heading out to the Emerald Isle. After all, there's much more to see than pubs full of Guinness.

Aer Lingus is offering the deal, which includes hotel and round-trip airfare on the airline. You'll shack up in the Regency Hotel in Ireland's capital city during your stay.

The Government Warns Against Traveling to Northern Ireland

Where: Ireland
September 1, 2010 at 9:08 AM | by | Comments (4)

If you were planning a trip to Northern Ireland, the U.S. government believes you should think twice and perhaps even cancel your plans. The good news is you can still go there to party on St. Patrick's Day in 2011..

The region has a history of violence, but a spree of bombings over the last month prompted the U.S. Bureau of Consular Affairs in Ireland to issue a warning to tourists. The warning is for April through August, when many parades are held, so those St. Pat's plans are still a go. The official statement tells travelers to remain alert in their surroundings as violence can break out at potential flash points. It went on to say that peaceful demonstrations could turn aggressive and possibly escalate into violence.

April 20, 2010 at 8:30 AM | by | Comments (0)

While the deadly ash clouds from Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull continue to inconvenience millions of airline passengers and cripple certain industries that rely on frequent air deliveries, we can't forget about the real martyrs in this situation: the marooned celebrities.

Without first class lounges, direct flights and the ability to buy their way across the Atlantic, celebs have taken to inventing creative solutions for their travel problems. First there was actor John Cleese, who hired a taxi to drive him through several countries for $5,100, and now we've got the harrowing story of what singer Whitney Houston endured to keep her European tour schedule.

The songstress was apparently due in Dublin for a concert to follow one she finished in Birmingham, but with UK air space closed, she had no way from England over to Ireland...until she discovered the Irish Ferries.

Ryanair Wants A Bigger Portion Of Aer Lingus's Irish Stew

Where: Ireland
September 8, 2009 at 8:59 AM | by | Comments (0)

Depending on your opinion of Ryanair, their newest move could either be awesome or a total disaster. The cheap, no frills airline is looking to buy their Irish pals at Aer Lingus. They’ve tried on and off since 2006 to take over the airline, but the Irish government and the European Union keep putting the kibosh on the deal.

Most recently, Ryanair head honcho Michael O’Leary stated that his airline would ultimately succeed in buying their rival. Aer Lingus doesn’t seem as opposed to the idea as they once were, and they might not have a choice since they’ve announced that they have a little problem with burning through their cash too quickly.

As we approached our last day in Dublin, we wondered if we had anything left to see. After all, we'd hit the high points in the visitors guide. But I'm glad we had that extra day, because it was just the kind of leisurely vacation day we needed after all that running around.

Losing Time in Dublin, Part 3: A Long Walk to St. James's Gate

Where: Dublin, Ireland
August 22, 2009 at 5:19 PM | by | Comments (0)

We woke up at around 7:00 a.m. on Monday morning and went to the hotel fitness center, which was well-appointed, and then got cleaned up and headed out for a day of hardcore Dublin sightseeing. Today was the day we would explore the north side of the River Liffey, so we started out with breakfast and coffee at a joint called Panem, just across the river on Lower Ormond Quay. The coffee was good and the frittata was delicious, even though they didn't heat it up.

Losing Time in Dublin, Part 2: A Tale of Two Menus

Where: Dublin, Ireland
August 22, 2009 at 3:20 PM | by | Comments (0)

We decided to visit a historic old pub called O'Donoghue's, which is famous for helping launch the Irish folk group The Dubliners. We took a table in the outdoor courtyard. The weather was steadily improving, and there was what the BBC forecaster called a "Cornish sun" in the sky, burning brightly but veiled by gray and white clouds. It felt like spring.

Losing Time in Dublin, Part 1: Beginning at the Pub

Where: Dublin, Ireland
August 22, 2009 at 2:13 PM | by | Comments (0)

We've been back in New York a full day now, so I'd better get my thoughts on Dublin down before they fade away like that last pesky hour of jet lag. After all, time in the Irish capital can seem a blur, and not just because of the ever-flowing pints of stout. It's a city of sensory overload, with so much to behold that it takes a concerted effort not to bump into people on the sidewalk. Okay, the Guinness may be a contributing factor, but Dublin impressed us and exceeded our expectations at every turn, and the five days we spent there were as fleeting as they were fun.
