Jaunted's Top Five Picks for New York Winter Restaurant Week 2012

January 5, 2012 at 1:47 PM | by | Comments (0)

The bar at Red Rooster

Yesterday we made the happy announcement that reservations are open for NYC's Winter Restaurant Week. Now, we're going to come through on our promise to let you in on our top picks.

Without further ado, our 5 top picks for New York Restaurant Week Winter 2012:

· Red Rooster, Harlem
3-course lunch for $24.07
If you can get yourself up to Harlem for a midday meal, then this is our highest recommendation. Not only is Red Rooster the current talk of the town, but it's actually worthy of the hype. It's soul food with a Swedish touch, on account of (Top Chef Masters winner) Chef Marcus Samuelsson's mixed African-Scandi background. We just hit up Red Rooster ourselves for their Sunday Gospel Brunch and ummm yeah. We'll be back real soon. Do not miss the Cornbread, Mac & Greens (omg) and Fried Yard Bird.

Forks Up! NYC Restaurant Week Reservations are Now Open

The Ratatouille L'Ecole burger during NYFW last year

Go and get 'em! Reservation booking has just opened up here for the semiannual NYC Restaurant Week, aka one of our favorite (and super highly recommended) city food events. This is the 20th anniversary of the event, and the eating takes place for longer this time around, lasting from January 16 - February 10 (weekdays only).

Get over to OpenTable quickly to snap up the best and newest tables, among them Boulud Sud and Maialino, lest you get stuck dining at some Theater District steakhouse that survives on tourists being loose with their money and not too particular about what's on their plate.

'War Horse' Conquers the Movies, Broadway, Libraries, and Now a Small UK Town

December 27, 2011 at 2:55 PM | by | Comments (0)

With a movie version currently in theaters, a Tony Award-winning play on Broadway, a novel on the best-sellers list and a past SNL parody, War Horse has completely invaded pop culture. But, it has also offered an opportunity to find travel inspiration in all of its various incarnations.

While War Horse (the movie) was filmed at several locations throughout the U.K., including Devon where it is set, none of the movie's locations is more picturesque than the village of Castle Combe in Chippenham. The small village was shut down last fall while Steven Spielberg filmed scenes for the movie outside the Cotswold homes that line its streets.

Travel Back in Time During This Weekend's 'Jazz Age Lawn Party' in NYC

August 18, 2011 at 6:12 PM | by | Comments (0)

So there's this thing. It happens twice a year in New York City, on the little island out in the harbor you need a special ferry to reach. It's amazing and it's only $7 to attend (advance, at door is $10). It's the Jazz Age Lawn Party, and it's coming up this weekend.

From 11am to 5pm on Governor's Island for both August 20 and 21, Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra will play tunes from the 1920s and 30s while the public—many in full 20-30s period outfits—dance, attend the pie baking contest, drink a few prohibition-era cocktails and socialize in the sun.

Here's a zillion pictures from the last one to get you in the Roaring '20s mood.

It's the sort of event that could only happen in New York City (okay, maybe London too), but you've got to get into the spirit. No wearing jeans and a T-shirt—the idea is to bring back the glamor and innocence of the Great Gatsby days, where men were men in suspenders and hats and women wore flapper-waist dresses and lace gloves. This is the sort of thing we'd kill to experience as a tourist to New York, as a local it's even more desirable.

The Cost of a Cross-Country American Airlines Ticket in 1964

August 17, 2011 at 3:53 PM | by | Comments (3)

Our love for artifacts of retro travel isn't exactly a secret, and we recently scored a vintage American Airlines pamphlet advertising trips to the World's Fair of 1964 in New York City.

This is the famous World's Fair that gave us the now-dilapidated fantasy structures that dot Corona Park in Flushing, Queens, and which exalted the advances of space travel. It was a fair people traveled to by airplane, and a jaunt from the west coast to the east coast for the event could be a family's big trip.

Photos and Video of The Cunard Ships' Royal Rendezvous on New York Harbor

January 14, 2011 at 10:24 AM | by | Comments (2)

Just as promised, last night saw the three Cunard ships—Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth—take to NY Harbor all at the same time for a little "Royal Rendezvous" and a lot of fireworks. This is only the second time that all three Queens have been together in NYC at the same moment, and the last was only in 2008, as the Queen Elizabeth II (now retired) made her final departure from the Big Apple after hundreds and hundreds of historical sailings. Needless to say, it was a very cool occasion.

We managed to take in the scene from the Cunard party in the lounge at the tippy-top of the Ritz-Carlton Battery Park, and still froze our bits and bobbles to death on the outdoor deck, catching these photographs.

The Best Spots for Viewing Cunard's 'Royal Rendezvous' on NY Harbor Tomorrow

January 12, 2011 at 9:43 AM | by | Comments (0)

We took this video during 2008's Royal Rendezvous (the first), as the now-retired Queen Elizabeth II tooted her horn. Seen from Liberty State Park in New Jersey—not a recommended spot.

Tomorrow evening in New York Harbor, the three ships of Cunard's fleet—the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth—will get together for the first time in three years, and for only the second time ever. The meeting of all ships in the harbor is called the "Royal Rendezvous" and cruise fanatics, ship-watchers and the generally curious will turn out in droves to watch the ships slide by and the massive accompanying fireworks display. And we'll be there too, of course.

We saw it three years ago, when the Queen Elizabeth II was making her final NYC departure, and this year there's a new ship making her first entrance: the Queen Elizabeth. She'll be the big and shiny one—ha. Anyways, we have to say that it is a very cool, very New York event, and the fireworks are awesome. They will feature Cunard red pyrotechnics, and even the Empire State Building will be lit up in red for the occasion. P>Now on to the best spots to watch everything:

Did You Spend Nearly $700 in New York City in 2010? Because Every Other Tourist Did

January 5, 2011 at 11:59 AM | by | Comments (0)

48.7 million. That, according to New York City's mayor Michael Bloomberg, is how many tourists visited the Big Apple in 2010. It's a record number for the city, and further statistics reveal that those millions of visitors then spent $31 billion in the city during their stays. That's each person spending $636.55, which we all know can easily be eaten up solely by a hotel stay.

Although these 48.7 million tourists in 2010 pretty much made parts of Fifth Avenue in Midtown and Broadway in Soho impassable, Bloomberg is aiming to attract even more this year. 50 millions is the magic number now, and, believe it or not, those numbers and their spending is helping to support the city's 5th largest employing industry: hospitality. Hotels and tourism rank after health care/education, business, trade/finance, and transportation, meaning there are a whole freaking lot of local people ready and waiting to help a whole freaking lot of foreign people have a great time in New York City.

All Three NYC-Area Airports Are Now Back in Business

December 28, 2010 at 9:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

Rejoice! All you stranded travelers and those waiting at home for them will surely be thrilled to hear that, after tentatively re-welcoming flights last night, New York City's three major airports are back open and in business. These include New York-JFK, New York-LaGuardia and Newark-Liberty, each a major hub and devastating to the rest of the system when closed.

Looking at FlightStats.com—which is where we originally saw our own flight cancelled before the airline had sent a notification email—we see that American Airlines is the only one really outright canceling flights still. Delta too is having a rough starts, with many flight delays approaching two hours, but hey—at least they are flying.

It's Already Christmas in New York City

November 19, 2010 at 10:31 AM | by | Comments (0)

The snowflake over 5th Avenue

Whether you want to or not, if you're in New York right now you've got to admit that it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas (and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa...). Earlier this week, we went ice skating at the rink in Bryant Park, grabbed some hot chocolate and toasted hazelnuts from one of the booths in the park's Holiday Market and then wandered into the Lionel trains seasonal pop-up shop right across the street. All of that festiveness was consolidated into only one block of NYC, so you can guess what the rest of the city is going through right now.

Then last night, New York City made Christmastime official. They lit the giant Baccarat crystal UNICEF snowflake that hangs over the intersection of 59th Street and 5th Avenue, celebrating with a choir of children and a performance from singer Keri Hilson. And a 2-minute walk away from that snowflake is the Cartier flagship, the entire facade wrapped in a ginormous red bow. Yep, the city has the spirit.

'Connect by Hertz' Promises to Connect You with New York Area Airports This Year

October 29, 2010 at 10:43 AM | by | Comments (0)

In case public transportation isn’t your thing, there’s a new option from Hertz to help you get to the airport this holiday season.

Connect by Hertz—that’s their car sharing program—is now allowing pick-ups in Manhattan and drop-offs to New York City area airports. Rental car rules usually don’t allow this kind of thing in and around New York, and Hertz is claiming that they’ll be the only car-sharing program in the country to allow customers to get rid of their car at the airport, rather be than the original pick-up location.
