If you're trying to get away from it all, and we mean really get away, consider a stay at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina, CA. Just north of Sacramento, it boasts a very laid-back meditative vibe, lodging for just 12 guests (single beds only) and practices of silence after the last prayer of the day at 7:35 pm.

Walking along the Sacramento River and passing a contemplative monk or reading a classic from the center's library might just be the highlights of your day. You are asked to leave whatever your means allow for meals and lodging.

The monastery, covering more than 500 acres, was also once the personal vineyard of the former Gov. (& university founder) Leland Stanford.
