Where Is the US Open?

The US Open just wrapped up at Torrey Pines outside San Diego; Tiger Woods won. The schmancy course has been hyping the golf tourney for more than a year, and they put on quite the contest.

Tiger Woods of course played well, but Rocco Mediate wasn't content to let him simply walk off with a win. After an entire 18-hole playoff, the two were still tied. On the first hole of a three-hole sudden death round, Tiger took the win.

Airport Photo Shoot: What? Is There a Plane Here?

Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo look about as discombobulated as we do as they stumbled off a plane in San Diego recently. Jessica's lucky one of this season's in maxidresses is long enough to keep her warm on the coldest plane.

The heat's been off Simpson the Elder since Ashlee was married to Fall Out Boy singer Pete Wentz and announced her "surprise" pregnancy, but she's been re-establishing herself as a country music singer at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee.

No word yet on whether Mr. Romo joined her at the four-day summer fest or even likes country music.

Already spent your entire economic stimulus check in Vegas? In 12 hours? Try San Diego. It offers beautiful beaches, wonderful weather and the local tourism board has just released a list of 50 great things to do this summer without breaking the bank.

No shirt, no shoes, no surfboard? No problem at this year's World Body Surfing Championships. Held August 23-24, the best of the best in body surfing take to the waves and put on a show. Just make sure you bring some binoculars so you can alert the competitors if any finned friends make an unwanted appearance.

Come evening, you can check out the funky shops and cool restaurants of La Jolla. After you've spent your last dollar on dinner, enjoy a stroll along the sand to check out the local marine life, including sea lions, and then watch the sun sink into the mighty Pacific.

Insane-o Pilots Travel: Red Bull Air Race Coming to SD

Remember when you were, like, six and your grandpa took you to that airshow? Kinda boring, right? Well the Red Bull Air Race World Series should change your mind about the whole going-to-see-planes thing.

The Air Race is what it sounds like: 12 pilots gun it around a course, skimming just 50 feet above land and water while doing 250 mph. They do their best to avoid those air-filled pylons, but obviously they knock into 'em occasionally.

The circuit flies into San Diego on May 3 for qualifying rounds and continues on race day, May 4. These nutsos will zip around the Big Bay between Embarcadero Park and Coronado Island. You'll need tickets, which start at $15; a two-day pass is a good deal at $30.

San Diego Still Rocks

As long as it's not flying out of a volcano, rock doesn't burn. So there's still plenty of it to climb in the recently scorched San Diego area. With year-round sunshine and all classes of climbing available, there's no better way to do your part to inject some tourist dollars into the SoCal reconstruction effort.

We caught up with San Diego's Front Range Climbing mid-ascent, giving us the latest from their badass version of the mobile office: a cellphone and a backpack. The outfit's main stopping (gripping?) grounds of Mission Gorge was spared the kind of scorching it got back in 2003. Four years on, the burnt forest has bounced back with fresh greenery--it's an ideal backdrop for a day's climb.

The rock at Mission Gorge offers a variety of surfaces and routes to match all tastes in climbing--boulders, cracks and 185 leads and topropes. (In other words, you'll end the day satisfied.)

Front Range San Diego fields five guides for all classes of climbs. Also on offer are team building exercises like interpretive hikes and GPS Scavenger Hunts. Sure beats doing trust falls in the break room with Gary from accounting.

Adventures of Link: The Situation in SoCal

10/29/2007 at 5:20 PM

The San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau is jumping into the YouTube game with an update from agency president David Peckinpaugh. San Diego is "ready and open for business," he says. Also on camera is a family of three visiting from Dayton, Ohio that hasn't had any trouble due to the fires.

We have to hand it to the SDCVB for embracing technology to get the word out, and tourism dollars can certainly help recovery efforts. But the video has that classic tourism marketing sheen that says, "Fires? What fires?" A deeper look at SoCal's post-wildfire situation might leave us feeling a little more informed.

Missed Connections: Towards A New Hotness in San Diego

10/26/2007 at 2:00 PM
Tags: , , (all tags)

It's been a hard week for San Diego, what with raging wildfires and subsequent evacuations. Our hearts go out to all those who were forced to flee or lost their homes this week. We hope you'll be able to come back soon because someone to love is waiting for you at one of these places:

RT's Longboard Grill -- Ron Trenton was a surfer who vanished on a flight from Catalina Island. Let someone with a beautiful smile find you at 99-cent taco Tuesdays. 1466 Garnet Ave.

Yard House -- This restaurant and pub may be great to work for, but even the full-time guest can appreciate the choice of over 100 beers on tap and delicious appetizers like Thai pizza. 1023 4th Ave.

Cafe Forte -- A cute guy (or girl) drinking coffee could make your day, but even if you're not looking for someone you can browse the gallery attached to this vegan-friendly cafe. 3139 University Ave.

No Mini Skirts on Southwest

9/05/2007 at 4:17 PM
Tags: , , , , (all tags)

Careful what you wear on your next Southwest Airlines flight. Remember: Halloween makeup? No problem. Reasonable walking-around-in-triple-digit-heat outfit? Get ready to be hassled!

Flier--and Hooters waitress--Kyla Ebbert got lectured by a Southwest supervisor for wearing a skimpy skirt, heels and tank top. She put up a fight, and Ebbert was allowed back on her flight from San Diego to Tucson, after the supervisor:

had her pull up her tank top a bit, pull down her skirt a bit, and return to her seat.

Pretty embarassing for Kyla. But at least Southwest didn't charge her for the blanket she had to wear on her lap for the duration of the flight.
