The Glen Canyon Dam was opened today to help resuscitate the ecosystem downstream. Built in 1963, the dam is blamed for the extinction of four fish species and the endangering of two more in the Colorado River.
Behind Glen Canyon is Lake Powell, a massive reserve now administered by the National Park Service. On the other side of the dam--down the river--is the Grand Canyon, on of the country's first national parks.
