What the Muskogee Okies Know
So there we were, hurtling northeast from Dallas toward Chicago on US Highway 69, getting hungry, dreading the thought of McDonald's but not sure where else to go. And then we saw it -- a smiling, walking pig chef on a billboard. Carrying a tray. Happy to be serving his compatriots to all comers. My Place Bar-B-Q it was.
In an open space full of old signs and flirty waitresses, the tables were quickly filling up for the $9.99 all-you-can-eat-ribs Friday-night special. We didn't have the stamina for that, but we did manage to finish a BBQ plate of chopped beef, spicy beans, and what we think may have been Texas toast -- super-buttered, and extra thick. Scattered over it all were fries -- wouldn't want you to leave hungry. And with it, sweet tea, served in an enormous plastic glass. It could have been 32 ounces, but we drank it all down. Total bill? About $8.
We don't know if My Place or other promising 'cue places are in your near future, but we hope you manage to fit some local flavor into your trip, whatever the destination.
