Sift Through A Seashore Of Sea Glass On Kauai
Update: Beat of Hawaii has the most recent update on this beach, including the fact that there's no glass left due to people grabbing it all in years past. There is however a Tripadvisor thread with links to pictures as recent as last year that show there is still an amount of pebble-sized beach glass.
Whether you enjoy crafting or simply can't pass on the temptation of an exotic beach, the Hawaiian Island of Kauai's Glass Beach is for you. A stretch of no man's land on the south shore, between Lawai Beach and Salt Pond Beach Park, Glass Beach is not for swimming just as it isn't the place for walking barefoot. In lieu of sand, the beach is made up bajillions of sea glass particles and hunks, worn smooth and pebbly from the repeated waves.
In order to reach this remote motherload of sea glass, we recommend a great GPS and some patience. We'll let the Washington Post explain why:
Glass Beach isn't mentioned in most guidebooks, and there are no signs directing drivers to it. The beach turned out to be in the middle of an industrial zone not far from the popular tourist area of Poipu on Kauai's southern end. To get there, you take the Port Allen exit off the highway, then turn down a street past some warehouses, then follow a very rutted dirt road to the water, wondering if you're going to owe money to the rental car company.
It's definitely a hotspot for collectors of rare sea glass, such as deep red or blue shades, as such specimens found here take between 10-30 years to tumble down. If Hawaii is a bit far, you could also have some luck on our own west coast at the Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, about two hours from San Francisco.

Trust us. A juicy burger with teriyaki sauce, swiss cheese and pineapple is delicious (and it's called The Local Boy.) You can find it at Ono's Char Burger on the North Shore. Watch the video to see it up close and learn what ale we washed that tasty burger down with.

Finally, I get to talk about one of my all-time favorite escapes in Hawaii: Kauai.
This is my fourth time on the island and it never fails to make me zen out and escape reality completely. If you’re looking for the idyllic Hawaii that you may imagine or see in movies and pictures, then look no further.
While we know the North Shore like the back of our hand (not to boast or anything), we did experience one first on this trip: a boat ride along the Na pali Coast, courtesy of Kauai Sea Tours. We had heard this was a must-see and do. The coast is known for its beauty and history, but is also pretty much inaccessible except by kayak, boat or helicopter.

Nick Nolte Beds Down at Kauai Airport
We've all been there. Your flight gets canceled or delayed and you're forced to kill some hours in the crammed terminal with everyone else. One thing we don't do: bed down on the filthy ground (unless we're amazingly desperate, but even then, we try and find a bench or at least a carpeted corner). Nick Nolte just sets up camp wherever he's standing.
Nick, looking very rough around the edges as evidenced above, stunned fellow travelers Monday night as he passed out cold on the floor in Kauai Airport in Hawaii. Nolte apparently was still very friendly and, when awake, chatted with fans, even letting them help him insert his dollar into a vending machine for some foul airport fare. Apparently he's currently in Hawaii to begin shooting his upcoming movie "Tropic Thunder" with Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr.

Summer Vacations With an Edge: Kalalau Trail on Kauai
This 11-mile trail runs along the base of vertiginous sea-cliffs fronting the completely undeveloped, completely uninhabited and completely breathtaking North Shore of Kauai. Formerly a mule trail used to supply isolated and now abandoned villages tucked into the pocket valleys -- invariably backed by crashing waterfalls and sandy crescents -- the Kalalau has long been considered among the world's most primo hiking adventures. The region has even been designated as a World Heritage site by the United Nations.
Alas, the trail has apparently deteriorated to the point where even the billygoats in the Kauai Chapter of the Sierra Club get the heebie-jeebies hiking the dirt and rock path that, in places, is now no longer than a foot wide. Meaning, you slip, you die, in all probability. No deaths reported yet but who would want to be first? Sadly, the summer is peak hiking season for the Kalalau. The dry weather means the trail is less muddy and the calm oceans make for more pleasant bathing at the beaches along this coast. Our advice? Hike at your own risk -- or take the kayak tour of the coast, camping along the way.
