Leonard Cohen's Island

Where: Hydra, Hydra, Greece

In 1960, when he was 25, Leonard Cohen left London and headed for Hydra, where he hung out with a few other early-adopting bohemians on this very rustic Greek island. Hydra isn't nearly as isolated as Cohen found it -- it's now a popular weekend spot, especially for people escaping from Athens, just 40 miles away. But it's still a very calm place -- motor vehicles are banned, and donkey remains the major form of transportation.
