It's not just the presence of some of Hawaii's best surf schools that make this town on the north side of Oahu a prime surfing destination. In its evolution from remote plantation to tourist destination, the city of 2,225 described by Outside magazine as "the anti-Waikiki" has lost none of its charms, and the waves still hit its shores in a way that makes even experienced riders say, "Dude!"
With a high sand-to-reef ratio and a low difficulty rating, new surfers can feel comfortable, too. Major surfer dude and singer Jack Johnson even wrote a song called "Haleiwa."
To get you in the mood, we've also got some footage from the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, held in Haleiwa in 2005, just after the jump.

Surf Hawaii Surf School, located on the north shore of the island of Oahu, calls itself the most amateur-friendly surf school on the third-largest island in the archipelago.
The school has classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced surfers, including children and adults. Instructors are CPR-certified, open-ocean lifeguards. Plus, you'll feel like you're on an episode of Baywatch Hawaii when Edison de Paula, the lead instructor/owner pictured above, gently guides you along the water's surface. Private lessons with Edison start at $130 for three hours. A small price to pay, we say.
In addition, anyone who books a surfing lesson gets an optional sea turtle sightseeing tour for free. Edison also offers a day-long excursion dubbed the "around the island surfing tour." In addition to a surfing lesson, the package includes transportation, a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center followed by a stop at either the Aloha Stadium Flea Market or to the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. The price is $195 for a minimum of two people. We were hoping for some more alone time with the younger, better-looking, chest hair-free version of David Hasselhoff, but we guess our friends can come along.
Find it on our Hawaii Surf Schools Map.

Last night's season premier of Lost has us thinking about the north shore of Oahu, where the waves start crashing in earnest right about now. All the beaches in Hawaii are public, so the only turf wars happen out on the waves. If you're aching to chase them, here are some suggestions:
·
Lodging: If you've got a budget more like a
Lost cast member's, and like being pampered, consider the big, lush
Turtle Bay Resort, where you can snag a standard room for as little as $199
or a suite well into the thousands.
If you're heading out with friends, try and split
Santa's By the Sea at $200/night. Did we mention it's
right on the Pipeline?
·
Surfing Lessons: If you're not quite up to
Laird Hamilton's level, get a setup from
Surf N Sea in Haleiwa. They've got you covered with anything from surf lessons to rentals to sex wax (for your board, not your night on the town--unless you're Kate and Sawyer).
If you're more into spectator sports than surfing yourself, remember the Pipeline Masters takes place every December, and your DVR can always keep its eye on the show while you're away.
