Garlic bulb hats are not required for festival entry.

Stanky breath be damned. We will put up with a bad case of halitosis to gorge on the 4,500 pounds of fresh California garlic at the 32nd Gilroy Garlic Festival July 23 to 25.

You can taste the aromatic herb in fest dishes such as calamari, scampi, stuffed mushrooms, Italian sausage sammies, garlic ginger chicken stir-fry, garlic fries , garlic fried green tomatoes, garlic jelly and peppersteak sandwiches. If you want sweet selections, try garlic kettlecorn and garlic ice cream.

Gung Ho For Gilroy, California's Garlic Festival

July 8, 2009 at 8:59 AM | by | Comments (0)

For fans of bad breath and wacky food combinations, the Gilroy Garlic Festival is like a mecca. The event, which started 30 years ago, has now turned into one of the country’s largest food festivals. Last year over 100,000 fans headed to Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, California to check out what’s new and unique in the world of garlic cooking and garlic products.

Make sure you skip breakfast, because you’ll need a lot of room to sample all the offerings in Gourmet Alley. Garlic bread, garlic fries, and stuffed mushrooms are just some of the halitosis-inducing foods awaiting you and your crew. If you like what you taste, plenty of cooking demonstrations will teach you how to make your favorites when you return home. Just leave a little bit of room for dessert, because of course there’s garlic ice cream too.

Garlic and Girls in Gilroy

July 27, 2005 at 1:09 PM | by | Comments (0)

On our festivals beat today...we've discovered the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, CA. (Thank god they have this, because that's about it for Gilroy) The festival's the be-all-end-all of garlic and they've carted in two tons of it for this weekend's annual gathering.

It runs all day Friday through Sunday and is $12 to enter but you get quite the smorgasboard of garlic fun. They have a Gourmet Alley with everything from garlic bread to scampi to stuffed mushrooms, as well as live music and a garlic cook-off and recipe contest. Don't miss the Miss Garlic Queen Pageant (above) where contestants have to give a speech on the merits of garlic.

Bring your own breath mints. Apparently, Listerine was going to sponsor the event but was turned down at the last minute.
