Cute animal alert! The city of Bern plans to open the BearPark by fall of 2009, and it will be stocked with critters of the vivacious--not stuffed--variety.
The attraction will be an expansion of the existing Bear Pit, where Pedro and Tana, two brown bears, currently live. The new park will offer more terrain for the animals including three caves and a swimming pool. It will also give the bears a bit more privacy than they currently enjoy.
Though the new park will be quite posh, it'll still be free to check in on Pedro and Tana, as bears are a part of Bern's cultural heritage: Legend has it that the city takes its name from the first animal killed when the area was settled in the 12th century.

After Australia's giant potato ended up looking like a piece of dino poop, we can say that today's news is not the first time a large turd has become a tourist attraction.
But in Switzerland a giant inflatable dog doo, which was part of an exhibition in Bern's Paul Klee Centre, has blown away and terrorized the city.
This art work, created by American Paul McCarthy, has the sophisticated name of "Complex Shit." Bringing down power lines and landing at some kind of orphanage is certainly complex behavior for a large turd--or a fantastic way to get the gallery some worldwide publicity.

We already knew about parking places for women only in Germany, but now you'll be pleased to know (half of you, anyway) that there are also these extra-safe spots in Swiss carparks. Unfortunately there's a problem: too many Swiss men are parking in these spots, so the whole plan of women having a shorter and safer distance to walk to their car at night just hasn't worked out.
But if you're hoping to drive and park safely around Switzerland soon, things might be OK. The city of Bern has decided to decorate these women-only spots with flowers and paint them pink, hoping that men will then be too embarrassed to park there. Well, maybe some men...
