Footballers' Wives Take Baden-Baden

A quick visit to the FIFA World Cup page will tell you that Engalnd is playing T-N-T right now, but the real action will take place after the match, and involves the English teams wives.  "The Wives" as they are known, are a group of fine ladies that include Posh Spice and Cheryl Tweedy, the finacée of Ashley Cole.  These girls have been dining and drinking at Baden-Baden's most ostentatious locations while Group B plays in Nuremberg.

On Monday night they dined at Medici, a restaurant that has served Bill Clinton and Bono in the past.  Then last night the crew dined at Stahlbad Restaurant, described as:

A smart, long-established restaurant with garden just across the road from the Kurhaus. Chef Jurgan Schmidt gives a good Black Forest ingredients a French twist. Warm goose liver comes with apple purée, while crayfish and leek noodles accompany a ragout of Wurttemberg asparagus.

It isn't just the restaurants that welcome these girls with open arms, according to the Times:

Pre-emptive action has also been taken by some of the town's boutique owners who have ordered in extra stocks of new season Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Dsquared. Several of the wives and girlfriends have been out and spent £4,000 in an hour-long blitz.

Mark Twain once called Baden-Baden "an inane town, full of sham and petty fraud and snobbery".  It seems not a lot has changed in the last century or so.

Somewhere every member of the Baden-Baden tourism board is smirking in German.
